The future archduke franz ferdinand was born in 18 71. His mother died when he was seven years old, leaving him with a reputation for being shy and withdrawn. At age 25, the young prince was thrust reluctantly into a role that he had not prepared for: heir to the austrian throne. The tragedy now known as the maryling incident ended the hapsburg line of succession.
