When people are using mindfulness, they have a goal of becoming calmer, getting rid of negative tension. They kind of want to regulate something that needs to self-regulate. So you might be able to leave thoughts alone when you do the mindfulness practice, but that doesn't mean you can leave it alone when your boyfriend breaks up with you or when you get fired. There's more chance than if you can do the same in those situations, like you can done in mindfulness.
