The superior laryngeal nerve provides sensory innervation to the subglottic surface of the vocal cord. It is blocked by anesthetic injection near the lateral portion of the cricothyroid membrane. The most commonly injured nerve during thyroid surgery is actually the recurrent laryngea. And that's really you're going to see it a lot, as that distractor answer.
