I don't think these people coming in did damage to our economy. In fact, I think you can make the opposite case. But if I'd still been in power after 2007, I noticed this was becoming a big issue. And that would have raised the prospect of a rethink much earlier than she would have been comfortable with. What is truly odd about this situation is that we held a referendum in circumstances where the government didn't want to alter. They wanted the status quo. So your risk is enormous because if people vote against what you're doing, you're then saddled with something you genuinely think is contrary to the public interest.
