The WHO issued new guidelines for naming diseases in 2015. The preference is to name the disease according to the pathogen that causes it. This was spurred on by the swine flu, which led to unnecessarily unnecessary mass slaughters of pigs. But when jumped to late 2019, and we think it happened in a wet market in Wuhan, a coronavirus has been named COVID-19.
