The Paradox of Cryptozoology
In 1948, a Scottish ethnologist and adventurer by the name of Ivan T. Sanderson published an article in the Saturday Evening Post entitled There Could Be Dinosaurs. To be considered a cryptid animal, he wrote, it takes more than simply being an undiscovered animal. In one sense, those criteria make the job of cryptozoology more difficult. They narrow the field's window down to only include the most unlikely and spectacular of possible subjects. The community has long suffered, trying to legitimize itself by gaining the support of accredited, reputable experts.
