General William Y. Smith was special assistant to the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. His brother and his family lived in Arkansas, but he didn't think they would survive a nuclear attack. Sergey Khrushchev, the son of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev,. was similarly pessimistic about the possibility of surviving nuclear war. He thought it will be invasion then it will be really beginning of the end of the world.
