The Microbiome and the Gut Brain Axis
I wanted to study how it affected gut physiology. And so for my PhD work, what we did is we actually used bacteria as a therapeutic. So instead of looking at just modulating the entire microbiome, we looked at how can we design bacteria to produce a specific compound or a molecule and get that to perform a specific function in the GI tract. Most people think of the microbiome and they think of bacteria as something that does something that's good for us or helps us digest food. But they fail to realize that specific bacteria have specific jobs and roles and can replicate in different parts of theGI tract.
