The Importance of Neutrality in Liberal Institutions
The rule of law is supposed to apply to everyone without reference to who they are, only with reference to what they have done that brings them before court. That idea sits really close to the foundation of everything that we think of as liberalism since the 17th or 18th century. Then debates arise about whether that's a good way to think about liberal institutions altogether. And there might be different answers to the questions, should states be neutral and should liberalism as a doctrine be neutral?
