The History of the Scientific Revolution

At the start of the scientific revolution, Descartes, Boyle and Newton were serious realists about the unobservable world. But they didn't get very far in the 17th century. They found out quite a lot of interesting things like the air exerts pressure but no mechanistic explanation could be derived. And so it went until well into the 19th century.
