Beethoven is a completely different being from anything that has come before Haydn. He owes nothing to anyone he is totally aware of his place on earth and his purpose on earth. There is self mockery in Beethoven which is the most astonishing thing you certainly don't find in anybody in the previous century or in his own century. No composer of his time or of a very very long time afterwards is able to practice that kind of detachment from himself and his art.
