The Tension Between Liberalism and Imperial Expansion Is Always There, Right?

People didn't actually start calling themselves liberals until the nineteenth century. And then it is always from the very beginning, particularly in a british context, liberalism is always evolving in these co constituting ways with imperial expansion. There really is never a moment when those two things are not going hand in hand. That tension has been there since forever, right? and i think one of the things that that contemporary liberals want to do is con consistently kind of sheer that past away.
