His drawing socrates very directly says it does not matter if the ideal republic, the kind of republic he's sketching, is politically possible or ever existed. In this respect, it's a fiction, like the garden of eden. Just as in the Garden of eden, adam and eve are ruled by wonderful ideal passions and love and so on, until the fall.
