"I'm so glad she sacrificed like that because we wouldn't even be alive. You're thinking you saved us in this position," the author says of her mother, who was beaten by her father as a child. "We didn't necessarily know what blood was, but yeah, she, you can hear her and you know that she was fighting for us." The book is based on an experience with foster care where many children were not seen or valued at all.
