The Athenian Spartan Alliance
The ambassadors sent to Sparta were not tried. Instead, they were simply flung down a well and told that if they saw earth and water, they would find both down there. This whole incident may be grimly comedic, but it also was a massive breach of diplomatic protocol. Although I'm not saying the two events were related, the Spartans soon found themselves thrown into disarray by internal maneuverings.
