Justin reports that he was stabbed 17 times. The verdict of historians is unanimous. Vitalian had rebelled against an emperor, and could not be trusted. Now there was no longer any serious rival to Justin or his nephew. Few eras in Roman history are as well covered by contemporaries as the reigns of Justin and Justinian.
