In tibetan buddhism, visualization can be used to stabilize and calm the mind. The next stage of yoga practice is called dioga where you dissolve awareness in a pchamata practice. Dioga involves imagining yourself as a deity or holding onto solid things such as sticks or pebbles. It's more about how we're relating to our projection s/he says. And so i would think that the opening, opening Yoga is less commonly used now than it once was.
