Mummer's plays are hugely important part of mediaeval celebration of christmas. They involve putting on masks and going into homes in order to do them. And there is a specific custom, specifically for yorkshire, that's called mumming. So we think saint francis of assisi, in about 12 23, is the one who came up with the idea of doing a live nativity scene. But they would start out with having baby jesus and mary and joseph in the stable,. until eventually the magi show up on epiphany.
