The Limitations of Text and Lectures

There are sorts of ideas that people come up with for different pedagogical tools, which are mediums that give closer connection to the reader. As far as I know, there isn't something that has really taken off using these sorts of new mediums. What do you think that is? Is this just an inherent limitation of everything about text and lectures or people just haven't given it the right content? And yeah, design. We don't quite have those yet.
