School cafeterias are the second biggest anti hunger programme in the united states after snap food benefits. 30 million children that rely on the school food, that need that school food. And it's a substantial portion of the calories that children living in poverty get during the school year. So when that went away, families went hungry, and children actually went hungry. Hunger researchers were flabbergasted. We usually don't even measure hunger itself. But this was hunger. I'm going to bed hungry. I'm skipping meals. My kid is gipving meals. It was a brief period of time, but it was so upsetting, so damaging.
