Aquinas' view of cognition and perception is a mind-world identity theory. When the mind thinks truly, it becomes formally identical with the world of which it thinks. The early modern picture of the mind-world relation creates a gap between mind and world. Human intellects are created for the purpose of exploiting the world's intelligibility.
