We Put Taiwan Off in a Corner for Later Discussion
China has been regionally assertive as you said, there are it's in disputes with various countries over kind of maritime territory islands. I worry that the US is shifting away from that without building up the capability to back up those commitments. The current president of Taiwan's Taiwan is a pragmatist and has gone out of her way to try to not rock the boat with China even as she tries to strengthen her nation. In this next election which you can't run in that a candidate from from her party may take a much more aggressive approach to moving Taiwan further along down the path towards independence.
