Amazon Web Services was always considered a business by itself with the expectation that it could even grow as big as the Amazon.com retail operation. Warner Vogels, now CTO of all of Amazon, wrote flat out in a core post in 2011: "The excess capacity story is a myth"

So, how DID an online book retailer end up building the infrastructure layer that powers the entire internet? (Or at least 39% of it, per latest market share data.)
