The Importance of Sickness
In the 1860s, Hawaii had a big disease problem and people were dying off. The Hawaiian government decided to exile leprosy sufferers to one of their islands. Father Damien volunteered to go in his brother's place when he got sick. He was sent to Malakai - which is now known as Hanauma'i or 'The Leper Peninsula,' but it wasn't meant to be like that.
