The Rise of the Oil Industry

From early 20th century onwards, leaders of the great powers always had an interest in maintaining secure access to oil. European countries reached into their empires to secure supplies in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. In 1960, Iran-Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela formed a close-knit club called OPEC. From now on, these oil-rich nations would have a much larger say in how the oil market was run.
