I would say a lot of it was naivete on t behalf of the american people. There were soviet agents all throughout the government. And then outright lying and propaganda. You know, for instance, look at walter duranty at the new york times feeding stolinos propaganda about the holodomor. I think maybe now, finally, 80 years later, we could start asking the right questions.
