There is no evidence for any jews of the period taking that verse as a prophecy of a messianic king. There are rumours about jesus birth being a bit strange, and people saying, our year, we know what that was about. It's more mysterious than we might imagine. And certainly it would be too much of an easy cheap shot to say, oh, the christians just made that up.
