The key parallel from our perspective though is that Germany very much believed by the summer of 1914 that it had run out of time. Japan doesn't become really aggressive until its economic rise in the 1920s stops the Great Depression hits and it feels like it needs to carve out kind of this vast autoharkic empire centered in Manchuria.
