Carib colonization of the islands, it seems, had already advanced all the way through the windward islands by the time europeans showed up. And in some places they particularly, they would kill or drive off the men, but take women captive. So there was a weird kind of linguistic admixture where tino societies would speak in our awakin language and caribs would speak carib.
