There were reportedly many signs and miracles seen a in europe at this time, which people interpreted as a sign of the legitimacy of the pope's crusade. Peter the hermit gathered around himself a kind of cult of enthusiastic followers who a charged through the countryside to drum up support for the armed pilgrimage. The movement gradually gathers together into large makeshift peasant armies that set out from france and low countries and western germany on their way to jerusalem.
