The Importance of Being Beautiful
There was rumor she used sorcery to stay beautiful. Maybe not so much anymore, but in times past Nina writes this could be a little bit of expression of xenophobia. She may have been making some big sacrifice for her family by agreeing to come and be the mistress to the king in order to bail her family out. This may have been like kind of a martyr to her family here in a sense.
