The walker house had become a place of sanctuary for people in need. Women escaping the unkind hands of a poorly matched husband or children who found cruelty rather than compassion at home, often filled its halls. It was a way station for other grannies and practitioners passing through or leaving the area when safe lodgings were not available elsewhere.
