Thomas Hunt Morgan established Drosophila as a model species in the early 1900s. He was known for his work on marine organisms, but he also wanted to make people group around something. In recent years there has been a return to comparative biology and using experimental organisms instead of standardized models; that's not what Morgan meant by "model organism"
