There are debates that are reported to have taken place around the late first century CE regarding whether or not texts like Ecclesiastes and the song of Solomon defiled the hands. The idea is these texts were composed in some sense by God. And so there is some residual holiness located within them. If you touch them, that's, and you're not properly prepared, ritually cleansed to do so, then you become unclean that defiles the hands.
