Pity, Mercy, and Forgiveness

Tolkien writes that it is possible for the good, even saintly, to be subjected to a power of evil. He expressly calls Gollum's intervention a grace. A fifth structural theme is that of gospel like pity, mercy, forgiveness. Frodo will eventually show the same pity toward Gollum.
