Schuster Googers wrote the quartet in 1943, and apparently this music was a reflection of his horror at learning that Nazi guards forced Jewish prisoners to dance by their own graves. The DSCH motive will come back in a fast version and a slow version, until the viola goes off on a rampage of its own. We are gearing up for yet another quotation. Listen to the low strings and try to avoid the sharp attacks in the violins when you hear it in the quartet. Do you hear it?
