The Spartan War in Messenia

The Spartans defeated the Messenians and took over a considerable part of the Pumisis River Valley in eastern Messenia. Those of high status became perioicoid, while the majority now became hellots. The social class tensions that had manifested in other Greek polis in the 8th and 7th centuries BC reared its ugly head as Sparta was ruled by an aristocratic government. According to Herodotus, the Spartans were the Kakano Matatoy, or the worst governed, of all the Greeks. Lawlessness under brutal ruling elite left the masses impoverished and virtually enslaved. It was against this backdrop that we see reform in Sparta with Lycurgus
