According to a standard scale, Americans have as much racial resentment against Lithuanians as against African Americans. "It's a real indicator of the ability to push people's responses around just by the way you structure a survey question," he says. But if it were the case that responses on this scale are effectively arbitrary or could be pushed in any direction so that they're without content, then the scale shouldn't then be a good predictor of other attitudes,. We find that it really consistently is a pretty strong predictor of attitudes on a whole long basket of policy attitudes and political opinions.

John Carey is Professor of Government at Dartmouth College and is a co-founder of Bright Line Watch, a research group which monitors threats to American democracy.
