After Tito's death in 1980, the decentralized political system he put in place gradually began to fail. There were increasingly open power struggles within Yugoslavs political elite. Albie National nationalism was still very strong. These riots reinforced fears that ethnic Albanians wanted to secede from Yugoslavia.
