Introduction
Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is considered one of the founding figures of modern sociology. In several places, he presents his own approach as an alternative to historical materialism which he understands as being naive and reductive. He thinks that the Protestant Reformation encouraged a certain kind of mindset and attitude that made its followers willing and able laborers for the capitalist regime.
