The first computers were people doing calculations by hand. The engineering efficiencies and innovations improved that by sevenfold per decade from the early 1900s through World War II. Moore's law saw that metric, the computations per second per dollar, accelerate the 16-fold per decade or put in food and fuel terms: 2000% more food or fuel for the same dollar spent after a decade.
