Pip is the one leading the charge more so than Herbert's, at least in my understanding of what I read. He gets this sudden windfall and all long Pip believes that it is the elderly Miss Havisham who is his benefactor. It turns out to be instead maggots, the escaped convict from the beginning of the book. And this horrifying is Pip because he feels like his gains are ill-gotten. Even though Maggots made his fortunes after being transported to Australia.
