Traditional judaism long took the view that the most important thing that it could do to keep the community together was make sure people were following the laws and following the rules. That same tradition's view was that how you encounter the divine inwardly, in prayer, in contemplation and in giving meaning to the way that you follow those laws has actually a large range of flexibility within it. And even i hat internal disagreement at the time, you know, at the time the hacitic movement was coming into being, which was a more mystical and pietistic movement.
