The Impossible to Tell
The city of Shaddar Logoth has been completely destroyed by nature. The only trees you can see are lining a main boulevard that bisects the city. There is very little wood, like burnable wood at all in this area and it's extremely close to a swamp. John sets some grasses on fire with an arrow slit so they'll smoke out any potential enemies. He then goes into the swampland where he finds himself surrounded by insects.
