Britishness and the Industrial Revolution
You've written about Britishness a lot, and you've identified some of the things that we associate with Britishness which are gradually being eroded. What was the driving force behind the Union? I mean, there's the obvious one of Empire. Another huge factor in all of this, of course, was religion. The idea of Britishness was profoundly tied up with the idea of Protestantism - it has to be seen as a very, very important part of what it meant to be British.
