The Japanese defense was apparently built around small groups in dugouts with no hope of escape. In nearly every one of these holes, we pulled out 35 dead japs from one dugout. That's not only shocking for anyone, but it is something that foreshadows how tough this is all going to be. The japanese lose between eight and 900 men for these tiny, little islands. They're willing to suffer heavier casualties than the other side is for a bunch of places that are more important to them than they are to the allies.
