Cooney's Contribution to Neonatal Medicine in the 19th Century
In 19 17, one pediatrician wrote that incubators are passe, except country fairs and side shows. One bright spot in this decline was cooney's friendship with doctor julius hess of ch Chicago. Hospital neo nadal care made steady gains, so much so that by the end of the 19 thirties, incubators seemed simply out of place in a side show. Of the eight thousand babies who passed through his incubators martin cooney is credited with saving at least 65 hundred.
For more than 40 years in the early 20th century, Martin Couney ran a sideshow in which premature babies were displayed in incubators. With this odd practice he offered a valuable service in an era when many hospitals couldn't. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Couney's unusual enterprise, which earned both criticism and praise.
