Dawn: It's possible that a single AI can be much smarter than the smartest human. Dawn: Many people are scared enough of this whole space that they think. If there's things that you can't prove won't happen, then we should act as if they will. I would say it's pretty unlikely that the future will be so radically different from the past that past trends wouldn't be useful. We're stuck in a situation where the actual concrete systems in front of us are relatively benign and exciting but not safe for some people.

Robin Hanson is an associate professor of economics at George Mason. He is known for a number of his works including Prediction Markets and Futarchy, writings on the possibility of alien life with both the Great Filter and Grabby Aliens, his book The Elephant In The Brain about our social programming, as well as extensive work and thought in the field of artificial intelligence including a very prescient series of debates and writings with Eliezer Yudkowsky 15 years ago.
