The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village
The Stonewall Inn was a bar, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. It was allowed to stay open because the proprietors actually had to pay the police bribes not to raid the police. And they came that night on an announced apparently, and people inside were not prepared for a police raid. So as they were trying to haul people out and put them in the patty wagon, they those drag queens just rebelled. They just started taking their shoes off and throwing at the police. Then people standing around started throwing things and brick started being thrown. The riots lasted for three days. On July 4th that followed the gay liberation, the gay liberation front was founded in New York City
