The Color of Your Skin, the Better You Were
One of the themes in the movie is colorism. The idea that people are judged by even in their own group by how light or dark their skin is. When I started writing Bayou's character played by Joshua Boone, his father despised him. It kind of took me to my own father. And some of the problems that my father had with me is because I was a brown child. His favorite child was the very fair child. So there was this mentality of the light of your skin, the better you were. That lived on and still was on today,. which is really shocking to me.
